Satish Vegesna’s Srinivasa Kalyanam (2018) Movie Review
When I entered the theatre S P Balasubrahmanyam soulfully started singing Kalyanam Vaibhogam but I heard, “Neekundirooo Neeku mudindiroo“. I don’t get such vibes while entering any film, trust me I have seen much worse but this one seemed to be first warning bells about the storm that is going to hit the land and take my mental peace away.
Slowly, Big lady Bamma (Jayasudha) started saying about marriage and culture. I was just hearing the same sound, “Vacchava nuvvippudu Chacchav naa chetilo Kalyanam neeku **********. I am trying to adjust in the seat and the young boy of 8 years or so, is already planning his wedding. On the other hand, he is also witnessing a huge wedding and Jayasudha is adamant about traditions. I literally saw my watch… It was just the 10th minute.

Nithiin is trying to say all the right words, all right things and he is making only noises. I am unable to make out if he acting or lecturing. Sorry, even at college I never listened to the lecturers so intently. If I had maybe I would have been doing something else. No regrets… But still, the movie is not catching pace. It is still trying to lecture about good and being good. I am flabbergasted, exhausted, terrified and tired. I want something amazing to happen. But the lecture is not over and Raashi Khanna entered. I thought this will be the moment the lectures stop.

Now, I am hearing these lyrics in the same tune of Kalyanam Vaibhogam. “Picchi kunka vi nuvvu erri ebrasi vi nuvvu vacchavu inka unnavu .. Kalyanam Neeku **********“. Prakash Raj is resembling my irritation. Yes, if we lose time once, we will never get it back, yes, yes, I will never get this time back. I wanted to see if only I am feeling this. Unfortunately, I am in a row and a corner that only belongs to me, alone weeping about time all others are busy sleeping.
After 90 minutes…
Now, Nandita Swetha is trying to show some heartbreak but I am unable to concentrate on her. Jayasudha, Rajendra Prasad, and Nithiin have pre-occupied my brain with goodness. It is only good in the Middle-Class world where people roam around and give money to anyone. We don’t see them work but they can afford lakhs and lakhs. On the other hand, the man who is trying to figure out a way to work and increase his standard of living is asked to roam around like them for no reason. Still, when he was asked to postpone everything and attend marriage works, I was rooting for it. No, work is not life at the same time lecturing about it also not.
After 120 minutes…
Now, the lyrics are, “Emi ra Balaraju nee valla upayogam… Emi ra Thyagaraju neeloni vasthalyam… Povemi theater kelli po raa … Kalyanam Neeku **********”.
The storm turned into a cyclone. The crescendo of my patience has been reached. I am looking towards exit doors and watch. But Nithiin just realized that lecture #235 from the book “Marriages are made for people to meet and greet“, page no. 4819, para number 3, is still pending to deliver. He is delivering it to everyone and suddenly he realized he made a wrong promise to Prakash and heroine. He is admitting something but I can feel even SPB itching to sing, Kalyanam for one last time … Oh no, Prakash started lecture #468 from the book “I just realized my mistake“, page no. 5627912, para number (sorry, yaad marchinaa).
After 140 minutes…
The cyclone has landed, it washed out all my brain cells with it. I am pale, blacked out by all lectures and cursing my life goals. Still, I can hear lyrics for one last time, “Po Po ra Po inka… Challe chusindi po po ra po inka… Kalyanam mugisindi nee **********!” I ran… I just ran from there. Jai Satish Vegnesna… Jai Traditions… Jai Lecturing… Jai Jai Single song throughout the film…
