James Mather, Stephen St. Leger’s Lockout (2012) Movie Review

Set in the near future, LOCKOUT follows a falsely convicted ex- government agent (Pearce), whose one chance at obtaining freedom lies in the dangerous mission of rescuing the President’s daughter (Grace) from rioting convicts at an outer space maximum security prison. Right from the day Trailer released I knew this was basically “Escape Stuff” in space. The main reason behind watching this Sci-Fi film was Maggi Grace (Lost Fame), Guy Pearce (Prometheus) and Joseph Gilgun. Guy Pearce character has no charisma, but he had some great one liners. I liked Maggie Grace very much. She is gorgeous and she does an excellent act. The main villain convict and his madcap brother (Joseph Gilgun) are the other two who leap out. Rest of the characters were supportive. Story line is naïve reminds me of “Escape from LA” and “Fortress 2” .Predictable screenplay makes this film a bit boring. The effects are also well made, considering a mere $20 million budget… BGM was okay.  The main issue arrives with logics:

• When Guy flies from one window to another (Communicator says GRAVITY will keep you afloat). WTF actually Gravity will pull you DOWN not UP.
• Guy and Maggi Jumping from MS.1. How did they got the Momentum to reach EARTH from the stationary ORBIT.
• Control team saying MS.1 gonna crash as MAINTANANCE person was KILLED. WTF A Space station can only parked in Stationary Orbits. So how can they FALL ?
• If someone gets thrown from the AIRLOCK in space without space suit (they will explode actually), but here they show the person moving out in space.
• No MS. 1 tacking guns was shot by Space Police (if I count the score easily it will be MS1 [25 – 1] Space Police).

With $20 Million budget director could have easily worked with more effective TECHNOLOGY stuff than fixing to touch screen visuals. On the whole Keeping the Logics aside, Lockout with straight characters, casual thrills, and fair action episodes a predictably second-rate experience.
