Story:
Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan) had hit rock bottom in his career and his personal life, when he suddenly gets a second chance at redemption. He is given the prestigious, yet dangerous mission of cleaning up Goa of its all-pervasive illegal drug mafia. Pitted against the powerful drug lord Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi), a corrupt police department and a host of innocents trapped in the trade — Bipasha and Prateik Babbar — will the diehard cop succeed in this operation? He does find welcome help from the local DJ, Joki (Rana Daggubati) who wants to extricate the innocents, specially his girlfriend Zoey (Bipasha Basu) from the drag racket. The Drug Kingpin that has had the Goan police fooled for so long. The time has come for Kamath to get rid of this shadow named Michael Barbossa and with help from Lorry and Joki.
Performance:
Abhishek Bachan who unfortunately remains sober, cryptic and a tad too wooden for most of the movie, is a wickedass cop. Bipasu Basu is scintillating. Anaitha Nair is extremely glamorous in songs. Rana is still wooden, the sullen solemn Joe is right up his stoic alley. Pratheik‘s antic-filled acting job is fun, but rote. Deepika Padukone looked gorgeous in her item song.
All lead actors deliver, but it’s mostly Bipasa Basu for the men and Abhishek Bachchan & Pratheik for the women that make the flick user-friendly. All other women make blink-and-you-miss-them appearances.
The visuals, especially the Goa locales, are full of chutzpah. Rohan Sippy etches all his characters using the right measure of reality and melodrama, and hardly any of them seems fuzzy or even caricaturish. Pritam‘s music is exhilarating and helps to move the story forward without being a hindrance. Dum Maaro Dum has an impressive star cast, the hit tracks [‘Te Amo’ and ‘Dum Maaro Dum’] and Gripping Screenplay as its trump card. Dialogues were extremely well written by Purva Naresh. Like,
“Sala jo jiya nahi.. Sala woh Kya marega”
“Drugs ka Paisa Khoon ki tarah hota hai sale apne system mein daudtha hai”
“Duniya mein Sabse baadi illegal cheez kya hai maaloom tereku..Tere Jaisa Middle Class Honna”
“Yahan Sharab Saasthe Hai,Risthe Usse Bi Saasthe”
Plus:
- Screenplay
- Music
- BackgroundScore
- Cinematography
- Abhishek bachan
Minus:
- Small Drags in 2nd Half & Near Climax
Survi Verdict:
Dum Maaro Dum doesn’t, however, drown you in testosterone; it wants too much to please. And if you’re looking for eye or ear candy, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re looking for a few laughs, you’ll get your money’s worth. If you’re looking for mindless but stylish timepass, you’ll be entertained. What else do you want? Meaning and substance? From a movie called Dum Maaro Dum? Get real.
