Singam – Yamudu 2 is an action entertainer starring Suriya in lead role. This movie is sequel to the successful movie Yamudu (2009). Suriya plays the cop character named Narashimham. Sigham was a great success and after that, Suriya got back to back failures with 7th sense and Brothers. So, he stepped in the shoes of Narashimham gain. Will director Hari revive suriya dwindling career after two back to back flops. Let’s check out…
Narasimham (Suriya), though officially away from the police force and working as a NCC master in a local school, takes full charge as the DSP of Kakinada, after a communal clash. Later, he collects enough surveillance data to ascertain that a dangerous drug trade is going on in the city. The bigwigs like Bhai, industrialist and international don Danny were involved, in that order of hierarchy. How the all-conquering cop singlehandedly takes them on and emerges victorious is the crux of Singam 2.
Suriya is impressive and his dialogue delivery also suited the characterization. Hansika did the role of a girl who is in awe of Suriya. She is fine in her role. Anushka Shetty is sensible in her simple girl portrayal. Anushka has very small character in this movie. Santhanam & Vivek provide much required fun. Rahman and Mukesh Rushi are good in their negative shade characters. Danny as main villain is not as effective as Prakash Raj in the first part. Anjali in item number is adequate. Rests of the characters are supportive.
Director Hari tried to project lots of mass elements though this film. You have everything here. Motorcycles Chase, Car sequences, blasts, Rain Fight, emotional death, dialogues on India, different camera angles, Mass hero, skin-touting heroine and an Item song. Hari has good taste at doing mass scenes. But what lack are a proper screenplay and a steady narration. Though he was good in connecting the two parts, but failed to engage audience as the first part. The direction of the film is average. The taking of this film is not as effective as the first part.
Music by Devi Sri Prasad is the weakest part of the movie. He recycled his old scores as background music in this film. Dialogues are all right at times and average most of the times. Editing is not good. There quite a few jumps in the editing of this film. Fights are the major asset of this sequel. Especially, Rain fight and a fight in the school ground are very good.
Photography by Priyan is neat. Some of the aerial shots and slow motion shots in this film are good. The camera placement is also different while canning action scenes. Production values are good.
Survi Verdict: First half of the film is very passable, film drags big time in the second half and the predictable ending is what makes reputed director Hari’s Singam very ordinary fare. The beginning is OK the middle order is passable but the final reels are very boring and predictable. Singam 2 is meant for the hardcore fans of Suriya. For the rest, the film may be interesting in parts, at best.
